How can you help families in Rubery this Winter?
Posted on: 22 Oct 21
Trident Reach are hoping to repeat the success of last year’s fundraising to help get vital supplies and Christmas food to families in need in Birmingham.
Following the success of previous years’ appeals; Trident Reach are once again fundraising for vital goods to help the children living on the Cock Hill estate in Rubery this Christmas. With rising food and energy prices set to get worse over the coming months, families will rely on generous donations to get them through the winter period. Families in the West Midlands will be hit hardest by increases in energy prices this winter, made worse by the government’s decision to reduce Universal Credit by £20 a week.
Rubery is shown to be one of the most deprived areas in the country, with 305 of the 473 children who live there, living below the poverty line. Many families living on the estate are on Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Benefit, Pension Credit, or Universal Credit.
In addition to this, the Cock Hill estate also faces issues with mental ill health, addiction, and domestic violence. Children who are as young as 11 years old have been groomed as drug runners for gangs, to earn money to feed themselves as they often go to bed hungry.
Bernie McFall, Social and Community Engagement Manager at Deelands Hall, is fundraising with an aim to provide Christmas food hampers for 100 families on the estate, as well as cleaning supplies and presents for the children. Last year Bernie managed to fundraise to get hampers to 60 families on the estate. One resident said they were “gob smacked” by the hamper and that Bernie’s work made “such as difference to so many of our lives”. With more donations this year, Trident Reach hopes to repeat this impact.
