Its important that your home is somewhere that you can feel comfortable in and works for you. We can help you to maintain your independence and improve your quality of life by supporting you to adapt your home.
This maybe something minor such as fitting a handrail or could involve fitting a lift.
We are here to help with any adaptions you may need to your home to make it more accessible and suitable for you.
What are Aids and Adaptations?
An aid and or adaptation is something that can be changed or added to your property or its fixtures and fittings which will assist you to live independently.
It could be as small as a handrail or lever tap, or as big as a ramp to enable easier access to your property or a wet room to make it easier to shower.
These can be split into two areas:
- A minor adaption
- A major adaption
What is a “Minor Adaptation”?
A minor adaption is one that costs less than £1000 and can include the fitting of fixed aids and adaptations such as grab rails, handrails, small alterations to the external access, taps, alterations to the height of sockets and door handles. If your adaptation falls into this category, we’ll pay for the work.
What is a “Major Adaptation”?
Major adaptations are larger scale alterations costing £1000 or more and include level access showers, wet rooms and in special circumstances and complex needs through-floor lifts and extensions providing the property is suitable to adapt.
They are usually funded through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG), which is provided by your local authority. If DFG funding is not available, we may be able to support with funding the adaptation up to £5000.
What to do if you need an adaptation
You must begin by getting an assessment: You must speak to your GP to make a referral to occupational therapy services, or speak directly to your Local Authority by visiting www.gov.uk/apply-needs-assessment-social-services.
They will then carry out an occupational or personal needs assessment to see what will help you in your home.
Minor adaptions:
We may be able to carry out minor adaptations quickly but we are likely to need an occupational therapist assessment to make sure the adaptions are the most suitable for you.
Major adaptions:
An occupational therapist may say that you need a major adaptation to your home. If the local authority have agreed to fund it through the Disabled Facilities Grant, they will contact Trident too for permission to do the works. We will always work with them to make sure your adaption is completed as soon as possible.
