Ex-Serviceman remembers fallen with touching tribute
One of our residents at our Extra Living Scheme, Oakland Village, and his son, have built a miniature cenotaph which is on display at the site. Steve and his wife Nicola built and decorated the cenotaph after resident Wilf suggested that it would be a “good way of remembering them”. Wilf has lived at Oakland Village for over ten years and formerly served in the Worcester Regiment.
Wilf’s son (and creator), Steve said; “It was all my dad’s idea and my wife and I have been working to make it happen. We are really pleased with the final project and the service to open it.”
The model was opened with a small service of remembrance to commemorate Armistice Day last Monday (4 November 2024). The service was held by the local vicar as well as representatives from the British Legion who recited the “Ode of Remembrance”. The service was well attended by residents who were impressed by the miniature cenotaph and commented on what a “lovely memorial” it was.
In addition to this the craft club have been creating a range of poppies which decorate the complex as a poignant reminder of those fallen.
