Trident launches new male domestic abuse campaign

Posted on: 18 Nov 22

Today for International Men’s Day, Trident are recognising the day by raising awareness of the domestic abuse services we provide for men.

Domestic abuse is unacceptable and can affect victims’ lives.

We also recognise however that it can be difficult for men to reach out and ask for help. In fact, research by ManKind finds that 61% of men who call their helpline had never previously spoken to anyone about their abuse.

Today we are launching our a “Be a Mate” campaign. The campaign encourages people to check in with their male friends, loved ones, and colleagues who may be victims of abuse.

If you are worried about a friend or loved one, what can you do?

Check that they are currently safe. Never ask in front of or around their partner. If your friend or loved one is in immediate danger, always call 999.

Ask “How are you? I’m worried, is everything ok at home?” – it is always better to ask someone.

They may not feel ready to answer. Do not push them if they are not ready to speak. They will know you are someone they can ask for help if they change their mind.

Listen attentively if they do open up. Do not be overly emotional or dismissive. Instead listen and ask how they would like you to help.

Your friend or loved one may not be ready to leave. Continue to support them and sign post them to services such as Trident or Cranstoun for advice.

Ring 0800 111 4223 or 0121 633 1750 for help and advice. Our helpline is open Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm

By encouraging people to talk about domestic abuse, Trident are hoping that more men who need help can access it. Trident have provided the long-term accommodation for male victims of abuse since 2015 and are proud to work closely with Birmingham City Council and Cranstoun to provide specialist support services.

If you would like a poster for your business or community group or to support the campaign, email communications@tridentgroup.org.uk.
