Black History Month: Lester's Story

Posted on: 27 Oct 22

As part of Black History Month, we have been asking customers about issues affecting them.

Our Customer Voice Standing Group Panel member, Lester Burke MBE, spoke to us about his experiences tackling discrimination in the 1960s.

Lester Burke also campaigned against racism in education, mental health services, and is a leading elder in the Birmingham Black community.

Discrimination in housing (while illegal since the Race Relations Act of 1968) still disproportionally affects Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic. Black people are 5 times more likely to be discriminated against when applying for housing.

Trident is proud to be the first housing association to adopt the RACE Equality Code. The code is intended to create transformational, sustainable, and lasting change to tackle racism.
