Horse racing isn’t just a hobby for Alan Caddick — it’s a passion. He has memorised every Grand National winner since the 1980’s, and this year, thanks to the support of Trident support workers Gary and Kenny, Alan set off on the trip of a lifetime: eight unforgettable days in Blackpool, culminating in Grand National weekend at Aintree.

Alan, has Autism which in some people can affect their confidence in social environments which made him documenting his journey through a detailed diary and a lively video vlog as part of our Save Supported Housing Campaign even more impressive.
This is a great example of how much supported living empowers individuals to chase their dreams and seek true independence.

Day-by-Day Highlights from Alan’s Diary
Monday 31 March – Arrival in Style
Alan kicked off his holiday with toast and unlimited tea at Wetherspoons before catching a train to Blackpool. After checking into the Royal Seabank Hotel, he enjoyed a three-course meal, unpacked, and made the most of the free bar.
Tuesday 1 April – Markets and Betting Plans
A tram ride took Alan to Fleetwood Market — which he was surprised to notice it was “bigger than the Bull Ring!” in this hometown of Birmingham. After the day In Fleetwood market he had an evening of bingo and done some racing strategy ahead of the big event.
Wednesday 2 April – Rest, Reflections and Generosity
A quieter day saw Alan watching Champions, the film about Bob Champion’s 1981 Grand National victory. The day took a heartwarming turn when the hotel owner offered him a free stay during the Blackpool Illuminations later this year which Alan is excited to take him up on in October.
Thursday 3 April – Aintree Begins
Limousine? Check. Free drinks? Check. Meeting ITV Racing stars like Ed Chamberlin and Sam Quek? Check! Alan backed one winner in the opener – Impaire Et Passe – and soaked in the atmosphere at the races.
Friday 4 April – Ladies Day and Star Encounters
Though he didn’t win on the track, Alan received a signed ITV Racing schedule and a custom weather forecast video from ITV’s Emma Jesson.
Saturday 5 April – The Grand National
Alan had ten horses in the big race but backed Hewick as his main hope. Though the horse finished 8th, Alan cheered as Nick Rockett took the crown. “Perfect jumping ground today” he noted.
Sunday 6 April – Blackpool Fun
On his last full day Alan ventured via tram to Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The entertainment was fine but the pictures for the day were a little bit expensive, so he opted to pack his suitcase early and settled down back at the hotel and watched the entertainment there.
Monday 7 April – Homebound, But Already Planning Ahead
Alan returned home to Birmingham — already booked in for the 2026 Grand National and October’s Illuminations.
Why This Trip Mattered
Alan’s diary isn’t just a record of a race; it’s a celebration of independence, joy, and support. With a little help from his support team, Alan turned a personal dream into reality and really showed his star quality in front of the camera interacting with professional TV pundits.
“This holiday will be one for the ages,” Alan wrote. We couldn’t agree more.
