At Trident Group, we believe in the power of community, and understand how important building connections with people is to support healing and growth.
That spirit was beautifully brought to life during a recent Poetry Night held at one of our Domestic Abuse sites organised by the passionate Sara Shaheen and Caron Ellis.
The evening was hosted by the incredibly talented Nia Speaks, who captivated the room with a performance of one of her original poems. Her words resonated deeply with the women in attendance, many of whom are on their own journeys of recovery.
Reflecting on the event, Caron Ellis shared:
“It is so important for the women that we support to hear about abuse experienced by genuine survivors, so that they can gain hope and inspiration, believing that they too can go on through their journey in life and achieve. Even better, meeting with survivors, seeing them standing tall and proud, hearing about their life after abuse and how they have turned things around. If a survivor can relate to another survivor, she may dare to believe that she herself may one day be that inspiration to someone else.”
The evening was filled with warmth, courage, and connection. One resident described the event as:
“Amazing and well organised. It’s so empowering and inspiring—meeting all the amazing women was inspirational, and even the refreshments were so good. Glad to have opportunities like this 🥰”
Another attendee admitted to feeling anxious beforehand, unsure about sharing in a group setting. But by the end of the night, they felt liberated, grateful for the chance to bond with others and share their story in a safe, supportive space.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees expressing how much they related to Nia’s poetry and how much they would love to see more events like this in the future. Some even shared their own poems with us which was a big step for them. It is important for us to treat our residents fairly and with respect so they are comfortable to grow their confidence with us and this was a great example of this.
This Poetry Night was more than just an event, it was marked a huge step in the recovery journey of many of the women in attendance. We’re proud of the team at Trident Group for putting this event together and all the women who spoke up and empowered themselves as well as their peers.
